I love the top of this webpage Gail! How adorable is that?

Have you considered putting adsense on this website? Hmm? I guess that's only available to Google. I just changed to the new Google Blog. No problem. I'm going to fiddle around with various templates. I still don't have the whole archive thing figured out. I've made a mess of them when I've changed the dates to force position of the stories. I may try the adsense thing just for fun. I wonder what products would find their way onto my stories. Dog food? Bird food? Chocolate?

All the best to you in 2007. We've bought a new place. Wont be built for a year. I'll send you the website later.

My husband and I sacrificed over the past 10 years to help our son get into med school. From the time he was 10 years old, he wanted to be a doctor. He is now a resident and is over $250,000.00 in debt. He wants to be a family doctor and will make about $80-90,000 per year. My sister's husband is a nurse and makes more than that. My son will be responsible for people's lives and will probably be sued before he gets out of residency. Here in the US, kids are not even thinking of becoming doctors because of the above. Yes, he will end up making more than most people, but he has had to go to school for 20 years and will be a resident for another 4. He plans to open a free clinic in one of the most dangerous cities in the US. So, yes, let's celebrate doctor's day for those who are truly called to this profession.

Hi MM,Thanks for your comments. I think when things settle down, I am going to write a letter to the hospital CEO and pass on a few of my thoughts on the 'hospitalist' idea. It does not work as intended and even some of the nurses have said this. I can understand now why the nursing staff often didn't know who my sister's doctor was. If the doctor who is coming to the end of a particular rotation doesn't know who is following him/her - how can one expect the other staff to know? It must be very frustrating to work under such a system. I thought doctors were supposed to be there for the patients, not for themselves. I must say the nursing staff were excellent the past 2 weeks when my sister was critically ill. They displayed a very caring attitude when dealing with my sister and also when dealing with her family.Gail

Dear Gail,I am so very sorry to hear that your sister has passed away.I just updated myself on your recent blog entries ... and discovered that daily life has been very challenging for you lately. I was suitably horrified at your description of the care your sister was/was not receiving. You must have been frantic. I know I would have been. How could you feel anything but helpless and let down by "the system." I totally agree with your comments.I hope you are feeling better since your own surgery.Again, my condolences.MM

Excellent points raised here Aunt Gail! Ironically I was visiting your blog at work, we're having a quiet morning so I read bits of this thought provoking essay to some of my colleagues & they agreed wholeheartedly as well as myself. My only hope is that some Physicians who are just completing their residency & deciding on where to base their practice happen to stumble upon this! Firstly we are in desperate need of of an increase in Physician presence in smaller cities throughout the province to provide much needed care to the community, & also it would teach them to respect the challenges faced with life in a smaller city. You're right - plenty of opportunity to enhance their scope of practice, but also the satisfation & reward of working in a community with a small town feel where there is more of a friendly welcoming atmosphere to it.Well Done!!~*Donna Bradley*~

I do not agree that Bert should have been suspended for a life time. It was a big mistake, he didn't mean it. Gary let him out of this one because he is a big star.

Well said MM.Personally, I don't mind a good clean hit but what Todd did went way overboard. I don't think there is anyone who would disagree. What some folks disagree with is the punishment he received.Interestingly enough, there are a fair number of sports writers that agree his punishment should have been far more severe. I don't know that any of them would agree with a life suspension which is what I think would have been appropriate. The NHL brass keep sending out the wrong message time and time again.
